                  <p class="paragraph_style_3">Parents’ Voice member Homara Ahmad is alarmed, and wants to know: <br /></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_3">“Just how unsafe <span class="style_2">are</span> Burnaby Schools?”<span class="style_4"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_4"> <span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5">After reading the story by columnist Jon Ferry featured in the <span class="style_2">Province</span> about the vicious torment at school a young student was forced to endure because he was “skinny”, and the failure of the Burnaby trustees to protect this student, and hearing of other disturbing “bullying” incidences--some involving teachers as the perpetrators--Parents’ Voice members wanted to know the extent of the “bullying” problem: who the perpetrators are--staff or students--and their targets.<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5"> <span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_6">Parents’ Voice<span class="style_6"> member and spokesperson Homara Ahmad made what she thought would be a simple </span><span class="style_7">Freedom of Information </span><a title="Ahmad_FOI_Request.html" href="Ahmad_FOI_Request.html" class="style_8">request</a><span class="style_6">. June 29, 2011 she wrote to Burnaby District School Superintendent Claudio Morelli making a </span><a title="Ahmad_FOI_Request.html" href="Ahmad_FOI_Request.html" class="style_8">request</a><span class="style_6"> for “</span>copies of all reports, incidents recorded, and/or complaints made involving students, staff or any other person related to the operation of the Burnaby School District, that has been party to <span class="style_9">any form</span> of bullying, assault, harassment, verbal abuse or any form of mean-spirited conduct, that has occurred on or near any property owned, managed or operated by School District 41.”<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_10"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5"> <span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5">Mrs. Ahmad also asked for an exemption from the fees, as requests made under the Freedom of information Act can be exempt from fees if the matter is of public interest.<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5"> <span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5">On July 11<span style="line-height: 12px; " class="style_11">th</span>, Burnaby District FOI officer Doug Berardine, writing in <a title="SD41_reply_to_Ahmad.html" href="SD41_reply_to_Ahmad.html">response</a> to the request for exemption, refused the fee exemption and stated: “The district will require your agreement to pay for the fees associated with responding to your request, and will require a deposit of $5000.00 simply to begin with.”!?!<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5"> <span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5">Parents’ Voice members believed that fulfilling this Freedom of Information request would not be difficult, as the BC Ministry of Education requires — as part of the Safe Caring and Orderly Schools initiative and the Provincial Standards for Codes of Conduct outlined therein — that require that “Conduct must be continuously monitored to ensure codes reflect current and emerging situations and are contributing to school safety.”<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5"> <span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5">Homara Ahmad states: “It appears that the current board of trustees not only will ignore the set Provincial Standards for developing and establishing safe schools, it is clear that this district is provably disorganized. The Board is required to keep records of these incidences; the Ministry of Education goes so far as to provide them with the forms. Why would it take thousands of dollars worth of time to obtain copies of reports that are required to be generated, kept and relied upon?”<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5"> <span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
                  <p class="paragraph_style_5">Gordon World, another spokesman for Parents’ Voice, adds: “The response by the district proves three things: First, that there must be a lot of bullying happening in the Burnaby Schools for the information to be that expensive - $5000.00-<span class="style_12">plus</span>! Second, the trustees don’t want parents or the community to know how their schools are failing to protect our children, and appear to be covering it up or down-playing the extent. Last, it seems highly unlikely that the incidents of reported bullying will justify the special attention directed to the political agenda of the sex activists involved in creating Policy 5.45. I believe this last point is the real issue. If the claims of sex activists were true, and a disproportionate number of children were being attacked based on sexual orientation, wouldn't the Burnaby School Board be more than willing to release this information to back up their claim?”<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>

                  <p class="paragraph_style_5"><span class="style_12">Parents’ Voice</span> believes the information, if they ever succeed in obtaining it, will prove what they have maintained all along: <span class="style_12">bullying incidents in Burnaby will not justify the political agenda of policy 5.45. </span>Burnaby trustees, and others in positions of trust, should know better by now than to rely upon data and research generated by homosexual and other sex activists. Our children deserve better than to have policies developed by hyperbolic-spin propaganda, masquerading as research, generated by sex activists who want to promulgate their version of diversity politics and practices among our children, via the public education system.<span style="line-height: 15px; " class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
